Toyota Prius Prime Tops Green Vehicle List
March 19 2024,
Electric vehicles dominated the latest GreenerCars rankings released by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), with Toyota and Lexus models securing several top spots.
The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid took the overall number one position, thanks to its exceptional fuel efficiency and low emissions profile. The Lexus RZ 300e luxury electric SUV came in second, highlighting the brand's commitment to pairing sustainability with high-end performance.
In total, four fully electric vehicles (EVs) and two plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models made up the top six eco-friendly cars for 2024 according to ACEEE's stringent Green Score ratings. The scores evaluate factors like manufacturing emissions, energy footprint, and tailpipe pollution.
"Expanding affordable EV options rapidly is crucial so the benefits are accessible across income levels as we transition from gasoline vehicles," said Peter Huether, ACEEE's senior transportation analyst.
The affordability emphasis reflects market forces, as increased competition and improved battery technology drove average EV prices down 18% in 2023. Consequently, America’s EV sales surged 46% to 1.2 million units.
While dedicated EVs reigned supreme, Toyota's RAV4 Prime PHEV secured a spot in the top 12 "Greenest" vehicles. Huether noted hybrids offer an efficient interim solution where charging infrastructure remains limited.
Toyota's performance highlights its strategy of investing heavily in electrification across its mainstream and premium lineups. The Prius has been an industry pioneer in hybrid tech for over two decades.
As environmental regulations tighten and consumer demand for sustainable options grows, automakers are racing to field more affordable electrified vehicles with better fuel economy and longer ranges. Toyota and Lexus have clearly staked out an early lead in this crucial market shift.
