Reviving the Off-Road Legend: The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser
August 02 2023,
Toyota's longest-running nameplate, the Land Cruiser, is making a triumphant return to Canada after nearly three decades, tracing back to its roots of rugged durability. North American-based CALTY Design Research collaborated with the global development team to shape the design direction for the new Land Cruiser. Design elements such as the iconic round LED headlights and "TOYOTA" heritage grille, a squared body profile, and a pushed-back A-pillar speak to the Land Cruiser’s historic aesthetic while promoting better outward visibility on the trails. The First Edition grade, limited to 5,000 units for North America, goes the extra mile with round heritage LED headlamps, a roof rack, rock rails, and an exclusive interior design.
Impressive Powertrains
Powering the Land Cruiser is the exclusive i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. The system, standard across all grades, partners a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor, integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Energy is supplied by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, creating a total system output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. All models are equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, center locking differential, and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range, bolstering the Land Cruiser’s off-road prowess.
Mastering Off-Roading
Returning to its reputation as an off-road icon, the 2024 Land Cruiser offers impressive terrain capabilities. Ground clearance stands at 221 millimeters (8.7 inches), and the vehicle boasts an approach angle up to 31.0 degrees, max departure to 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle reaching 25.0 degrees. To enhance off-road protection, Land Cruiser customers can add rock rails and full coverage high strength steel skid plates. Off-road recovery is facilitated by standard front tow/recovery hooks. Trail navigation is further improved by Multi-Terrain Select, adjustable settings that control wheel spin on different terrains such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. The CRAWL Control function, acting as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, and Downhill Assist Control are standard features.
The 2024 Land Cruiser is designed on the TNGA-F global truck platform, providing durability in the harshest environments. It's slightly smaller and narrower than the outgoing 200 Series model, making it nimbler on the trails, with all the off-road tech that debuted on the newest generation of Toyota trucks.
On the tech front, an available 12.3-inch touchscreen, standard on the Land Cruiser grade, displays the latest Toyota Multimedia system and Multi Terrain Monitor crisply. This new multimedia system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and offers enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Land Cruiser safety is not compromised with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard on all models.
The Land Cruiser, an embodiment of Toyota's core values of quality, dependability, and reliability, will be manufactured in Toyota Motor Corporation's Tahara and Hino plants in Japan, arriving in Canada in spring 2024. Pricing details will be announced closer to its on-sale date.
