Pre-owned 2019 Toyota RAV4 vs pre-owned Mazda CX-5

The Toyota RAV4 was redesigned in 2019 and here, we compare it to used Mazda CX-5 models. We focus on the 2019 models, but ultimately the info here applies to most used RAV4 models when compared to pre-owned CX-5 models.

If you are looking for a pre-owned compact SUV, you have many options at your disposal. Two of those options are the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5. Both the RAV4 and the CX-5 have been staples in the compact SUV segment for years now. They are among the best-selling compact SUVs on the market, and whether new or pre-owned they are usually at the top of the list of anyone looking for a used SUV. Here, we take a look at each option and how they compare in terms of interior space, value, and other elements that are important for anyone looking for a pre-owned SUV.

Fuel efficiency comparison

The first element we want to look at is the engine, and specifically the fuel economy of each model. When you're buying a used SUV, one element that matters more than ever in today’s environment is the fuel economy. Yes, we buy a pre-owned SUV for the interior space that it offers and its versatility but we don't want to have to sacrifice fuel efficiency when we don't have to. Improvements made to sport utility vehicles in recent years mean that they offer impressive efficiency and a pre-owned Toyota RAV4 is a perfect example with an average fuel consumption rating of 9.2 L per 100 km in the city and 7.1 per 100 km on the highway. It delivers better fuel economy than many of its competitors including a pre-owned Mazda CX-5 which averages 10.2 l per 100 km in the city and 8.2 L per 100 km on the highway.

Cargo capacity and engine

Of course, fuel economy is one important variable when it comes to buying a pre-owned sport utility vehicle, but chances are that the number one element that you are looking for is interior space and cargo capacity. In that area, the Toyota RAV4 really shines with 1,059 L of cargo capacity. The Mazda CX-5, on the other hand, has a cargo area of 974 L which is fine on its own, but significantly less than the RAV4. Overall, the Toyota has roughly 300 L more cargo space than the Mazda. The RAV4 also offers a lot of rear seat room and it is a great option if versatility is an important criteria for you.

Now if we look under the hood, we find that the most pre-owned Toyota RAV4 models that you will find will be powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 203 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. In other words, you get slightly more horsepower than what you would find in a used Mazda CX-5 which most versions will offer a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 hp. Torque will be similar to the RAV4, but the difference in horsepower is certainly noticeable.
